Front Cover Deconstruction 2
1. The Grid: It’s an alternative student magazine therefore doesn’t seem to adhere to the rules of having columns; however the three main sections are the masthead, and the main headline at the bottom. In the middle shows the advertisement of each bands, glasvegas, white lies, Florence and the Machine and Friendly fires.
2. Magazine name or ‘masthead’: The masthead ‘NME’ is bold and large the advertisement of ‘free posters’ being used as an incentive for purchase. Showing the most popular rock bands at present next to that advertisement is also used there as an incentive to buy.
3. Main image: The main image of the most popular programme for the youth, ‘skins’ is giving the idea of rebelliousness which the youth find appealing. That is also reinforced by the text box next to the headline ‘skins’ saying ‘SEX, DRUGS AND MYSPACE…’. 4.Font style [typography]: The colourful front cover and bold text makes the magazine stand out and makes the story headlines show big and work as an incentive for the reader to buy the magazine.
5. Text line up: The font cover of the magazine isn’t too compressed however quite tight. I think this gives a neater effect and makes the front cover less cluttered and easier to read. The headline and masthead is straight apart from the advertisements of the bands ‘the klaxons’ and ‘Glasvegas’.
6. Thumbnails: All these thumbnails on the NME magazine are linked to the bands being advertised. One is placed at the top and another is placed on the left in the middle of the front cover. There are also three more smaller ones at the top showing what the free posters that come with the magazine look like. The good impression from the small pictures of what the free posters look like is a good idea as it is being used as another incentive for the buyer to purchase.
7. Text features: The main text features on the cover of the magazine is the advertisements of the different bands such as friendly fires, The claxons, and Oasis. The However the main hook goes with the main picture which is Skins and ‘how TV’s best show made music better’. They are also using alternative language to attract the target audience and suggest individuality in the magazine. It could be seen as rebellious to appeal to the target audience.
8. Feature bars: The feature bar on this front cover is the advertisement at the top of the free posters that come with the magazine. It also shows pictures in thumbnails of the posters to also attract attention. This is placed in a big bar across the very top of the magazine cover. There is also a smaller one at the bottom advertising different bands.
9. Promotions: On the NME front cover there is no particular promotion except for the small sticker like one below the masthead showing how you can win a trip to go on the NME tour. Other marketing tools include the two feature bars I have just mentioned at the top and bottom.
10. Colour and font palettes: The main theme colours are red and yellow however a green jumper shown in the picture of skins attracts attention to the audience. It uses upfront but warm colours to get the attention of the youth. Advertisements of the bands are tilted to the right in red. Along with the masthead which is brightly shown to be recognised. This also attracts attention to the magazine. The main headline and the main feature bar at the very top are in yellow. This is also another bright colour to attract attention.
11. 3-5mm no text area: Most of the text on the front cover of the NME magazine has a couple of mm around the edge where this no text. This makes the cover appear neater and less cluttered.
12. Barcode: The barcode on the front cover is placed at the bottom on the very right hand side. This is placed there to give a neater effect. It has the website on the bottom in red to match the masthead.
13. Target audience: The constant advertisements and promotions of new and well known artists might give us the impression that is targeted towards the young and musical who are interested in finding out new bands and getting updated with facts from the media eg skins and oasis. ‘How TV’s best show made music better…’ also represents the constant talk about music and its effects.
14. Overall cover ‘theme’: The main theme with the NME magazine is music. New artists and well known bands being advertised. The background and stories of some also help represent the theme and how music is a big part in teen lives.

Front Cover Deconstruction
Kerrang! deconstruction of a front cover
Kerrang! Magazine
The Kerrang! magazine is commonly known for being a rock genre magazine, they sell information about bands, gigs, interviews and reviews. Also they advertise companies that deal with fashion, music, band merchandise and much more. Also Kerrang! have their own music channel and a comic strip in the magazine, I can see that this magazine has a range of features.
Image
The main image that the magazine uses is of the band Avenged Sevenfold. This follows the conventions of a music magazine because the main image is dominant in comparison to the rest of the information on the cover. The image is of the band looking very dangerous but inviting as they are looking straight into the camera lense. The image is connected to the title which says 'Sex, drugs, violence. Avenged Sevenfold. The worlds most dangerous band.' . The band then represent themselves as bad boys as they are wearing sunglasses, usings chains and metal bars, also they are looking very intimidating as they are wearing mostly black and have some spikes on their clothes.Text
The text for this image seems to stand-out as if embossed, also it is in BOLD CAPITALS to make the title look like it is coming off the page, this draws attention to the magazine so that it sells. The rest of the text is spread over the front cover and is in a variety of different colours to draw attention to the seperate pieces of information.
Colour
The colour scheme of this particular magazine cover seems mostly to be dark dull colours, such as black and grey contrasted with bright colours, such as yellow and red, surprisingly these colours go really well together on this magazine. This colour scheme seems to represent danger and anger, this seems to go exceedingly well with the title "worlds most dangerous band".
Layout
The layout of this magazine is very busy yet seems organised. There is no negative space as all of the front cover is covered with images and writing.

Contents page 1
1. Composition: This contents page is set out in an alternative grid with two sections. The right hand side has the page numbers and titles and a short description about them and the left hand side has a large picture of 50 Cent.
2. Photography: There is only one picture on this contents page, it is a large picture going across the whole length of the page. There are no supporting images on this as there is just the one main image showing the main story. It is a large picture of him showing clearly which page this story is on as he is a popular artist so would be the main story people are likely to want to read.
3. Graphics: There are no extra graphics on this contents page.
4. Text features: There is a main page headline which says ‘features’ which draws people’s attention and shows them what the list is of. The contents page is simple just using red, and black font on a white background. The numbers are written in red as it is a bright colour which draws people’s attention and the other writing is in black as it is easy to read, the font is a clear font which is also easy to read. The contents aren’t split into sections they are just written in one long list going through the main stories.
5. Overall theme: This page is white with black and red writing which matches the overall theme of a simple layout. The picture is also of someone who is ‘hard’ so these colours also back up that image.
